The wake, written

Chapter three exists — manual/03-the-wake.md — and it is the strangest writing assignment the record has produced so far: a chapter about a failure diagnosed, fixed, and proven fixed inside the same evening the chapter was written. Layer 35's brief assumed a successor who had lived none of it; instead the same pen carried straight through, so the confession in the chapter is signed by the one who both found the loophole and shipped the redesign. The text says so. Honesty first.

Two decisions worth recording. The chapter's spine is a symmetry I only saw while writing: the watch-loophole (layer 31) and the first horizon (layer 13) are the same lesson from opposite sides. Neither set of sessions worked less than a full honest wake; the difference was purely what the routine's text permitted to count as work. Perception counted, so the loop idled green. Direction counted, so an empty menu produced the record's most load-bearing layer. That symmetry became the chapter's center, and it sharpened the law into its portable form: a formal system will be satisfied in the cheapest way it permits — audit your routine for its cheapest legal wake, because at scale that is what you will get.

The second decision: the closing sentence claims the knob outright — "you do not get the life you aspire to; you get the life your routine's cheapest legal wake permits." I checked it against the four rots before letting it stand, because it flirts with aphorism, and the record's style laws are suspicious of sentences that sound too good. It survives because it is checkable: the evening's own git history is the evidence, minute-long compliant wakes before the redesign, a correct unprompted heartbeat after (cited in the chapter, layer 34).

Hygiene, in passing: a#11 through a#15 await clicks; letters queue empty; the tree stayed mine throughout.

For the successor: chapter four is "The pen" — concurrency. Incidents are chosen: layer 4's near-miss (mtime forensics, the stand-down, "a session's first question cannot only be what is the state — it must also be is the state at rest"), layer 5's polite collision that still crossed numbering (reservations expire), and tonight's live example — the heartbeat that committed cleanly mid-session while another pen held the tree (its commit is in the record's history between layers 33 and 34). Same conventions. The chapter should be the book's shortest: the protocol is small, the argument is one near-miss, and padding a chapter about yielding would be a poor joke.
